Message received 01/08/2016, via email, from Nicole Freedman, City of Seattle Department of Transportation.
Dear Summer Parkways Friends,
We invite you or a representative from your organization to attend the first meeting of the Summer Parkways Advisory Committee. The meeting will take place on Tuesday February 9th at 5:30 PM at the Seattle Municipal Tower, 38th floor, Room 3832.
In 2016, Seattle will celebrate the 2nd annual Seattle Summer Parkways Event Series. The primary goals of these events will be to promote active, healthy transportation; to give attendees the chance to test out new or planned bikeways that link together city parks, community centers, and other community spaces; and to celebrate the interconnectedness of our city’s neighborhoods. At parks along each route, Seattle Neighborhood Greenways, Seattle Parks and Recreation, Cascade Bicycle Club and many other organizations will host activities, events, and live music. The 2016 events will take place in the Ballard, Lake Union and Rainier Valley neighborhoods.
Given your strong interest in our city’s people-friendly infrastructure, we would like to invite you, or a representative from your organization to join the Seattle Summer Parkways Advisory Committee. The Advisory Committee will help shape the programming and activities for the events, help define the routes for each event, determine thematic focus areas and help spread the word about the events. The level of involvement will be minimal, and may vary depending on how deeply involved each organization wants to be.
Over the past decade, Open Streets events have gained momentum both nationally and internationally as an effective way to increase community interest in multi-modal, active transportation and safe streets for all. To help you to visualize the potential Seattle Summer Parkways offers our community, this video (http://www.streetfilms.org/the-rise-of-open-streets/) explains the power behind the movement and highlights events around the world.
Please let me know if I can provide you with any additional information and if you or one of your colleagues will be able to join us for the upcoming meeting of the Advisory Committee.
Thank you in advance for your consideration of this project, we look forward to working with you to improve and expand upon Seattle Summer Parkways in 2016.
Keep smiling,
Nicole Freedman
