Local Mom & Pop Shops Hit By Overnight Burglaries

Small businesses in Ballard’s West Woodland neighborhood are on high-alert after several break-ins Wednesday night and early Thursday morning.  It is unknown whether or not these burglaries are related.

Local favorite Mean Sandwich, 1510 NW Leary Way, was one of the businesses impacted overnight.  On Instagram @out.of.step posted a photo of the door, which appears to have been smashed open.

Just steps away, Java Jahn Espresso and Catering, on the eastside of the Ballard Bridge at 1428 NW Leary Way, was also burglarized. Local mom & pop shops as far away as NW 65th Street were hit as well, including Stock Cafe, 500 NW 65th Street.

From Chris Blanco, owner/ chef at Stock Cafe, “…there was a break-in and robbery at Stock at around 3:30am on Thursday morning.  The thief entered through the kitchen window… and tried to exit through the front window by hitting it with one of our metal chairs. They made away with about $500 in cash from the drawer and the staff’s tip envelopes.”

As a result of this break-in, Stock is now installing a cloud-based surveillance system, and improving security at all entrance points.  Blanco also shared that cash will no longer be kept on the premises.

Business owners are asking anyone who who may have been in the area during the break-ins or believe they have information to call Seattle Police.  You can also “Text-A-Tip”.  The Seattle Police Department and Crime Stoppers of Puget Sound offer citizens the option to anonymously text-message tips about serious crimes.  These texted tips may be sent to Crime Stoppers in the following fashion:
