Ballard Woman Helping Homeless Family Build New Life

Updated: 10/28/2017

Since first sharing this story on October 23, over $3,500 has been raised. All money donated will go towards securing housing for the family.  This includes paying security deposits, like first and last months rent, as well as any pet related fees.  All this adds up fast!

The campaign will stay open until housing is secured. There is no donation too small, please give what you can.  Donate here:

Here’s an update from Courtney Keen, campaign organizer.

“UPDATE: Since posting this call for help a couple of days ago we’ve made some significant progress!

First, after seeing this post, a very kind neighbor contacted me and offered to pay for Heather and her kids to stay in their hotel for a couple extra WEEKS. This is HUGE! When I went to visit the family on Sunday I spoke with the manager on duty and she was extremely sympathetic to the situation….she told us she could take off the pet fee, give us the lowest nightly rate, and move the family to a unit with a full kitchen. Needless to say, Heather and the girls were over the moon about this news. The hotel is really quite nice, it is super clean and spacious, they have a huge breakfast buffet every morning, and it is a very secure building.

Second, I spoke to Heather’s housing advocate this morning. They are fairly certain that with a little extra time, mainly afforded by the additional hotel stay, they will be able to place the family in an apartment in the not too distant future and help with the first couple months rent in order for them to get settled.

Third, I took the family some extra gift cards folks dropped off, or ones I purchased with funds folks had dropped off. I also told them that they will be outfitted with boots, jackets, and the other items off the Amazon list. They were really, really excited. And so very thankful. Thank you!

And, on a final note, we were able to get in touch with the company Heather had a title loan with. We are sending in a payment, the loan will be paid off and Heather will get the title back to her vehicle. We’ve got a local mechanic, and all around good guy, lined up to look at the car and assess whether or not it’s worth it to fix the problems. After that is determined, we will get the car up to date with license/registration stuff.

I am touched at everyone who has commented, shared, donated, or reached out to help this family. I think it is the first time, in a long time, they are seeing a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel. THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! Pretty freaking cool, friends!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️”

Courtney Keen Ballard West Woodland

When West Woodland neighbor Courtney Keen met a homeless family near her home, she knew she needed to act.

“Charlie and I had seen her youngest daughter playing at a park near our house a couple times, and based on a few things we figured out that the little girl was probably living in one of the cars near the park.”

Keen started a YouCaring campaign to help the family get out of their car and into an apartment. Neighbors have already donated over $2,000 in response. All funds donated will be used to house and support the family of four, and their two dogs.

Neighbors are encouraged to participate, no donation amount is too small. Learn more about the family and make a donation here:
