City Hall is coming to District 6. In a series of rotating office hours, Councilmember Mike O’Brien will be in the district, ready to meet with constituents. This is a fantastic opportunity to meet our District 6 City Councilmember and ask questions you may have about city policy.

Our first event will be Thursday, March 3, 2016 from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm at the Fremont Public Library. Light refreshments and beverages will be served.

If you have questions please email jesse.perrin2@seattle.gov or call 206-684-8800.  Event information available here: https://www.facebook.com/events/636459949826821/

Ballard District Council Meeting: 01/13/2016

Original Post:

bdcOn Wednesday, January 13, 2016, from 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM, the Ballard District Council will be holding their monthly meeting at the Ballard Branch of The Seattle Public Library.  Normally I share out these announcements on Facebook and forget about them, but this is a meeting you’ll want to attend and here’s why.

(1)  Meet Mike O’Brien:  West Woodland, Ballard is part of the new Seattle City Council District 6 and Mike is our Councilmember.  This is an excellent opportunity to meet our representative, shake his hand, and give him your two-cents.

(2)  Marijuana is on the agenda:  No one will be offering free samples at the meeting, but they will be discussing the proposed new rules regarding where new shops can be opened.  Here’s the public notice.  The Seattle City Council is scheduled to consider these changes and take a final vote on Monday, January 11, 2016.

What’s the concern?  On January 6, 2016, the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board‘s three board members approved a proposal that could double the number of stores in Seattle and increase the statewide total from 334 to 556 stores.  That means 222 more stores could be opening, and one of those just might be in Old Ballard, which is exempt under current rules.   See map HERE.

More about the proposed zoning changes can be found on the Project Documents page and on the Mayor’s Medical Marijuana Ordinance web page.

(3)  Comprehensive Draft Plan:  Catherine Weatbrook will be discussing comments received as part of the Seattle 2035 process.  You can see some of that feedback today, formatted into visual “Agree/ Disagree” chart located HERE.  If you live near Gilman Playground, you will want to take special note of the proposed Urban Village Expansion which might include your street.  Find the map HERE.

Affordable Housing and Homelessness Platforms – District 6 Candidates

Primary elections are just a few short weeks away, do you know how the District 6 candidates feel about homelessness and affordable housing?  The Washington Housing Alliance Action Fund collected questionnaires from three District 6 candidates, Catherine Weatbrook, Mike O’Brien, and Jon Lisbin.  There is no questionnaire available from Stan Shaufler.  The questionnaires provide voters with the opportunity to better understand how the candidates would address the unmet need for affordable homes in Seattle.
