According to Project Know, a website dedicated to informing people about addiction and treatment options, 15th Ave NW is one of the worst streets in Seattle when it comes to drunk driving and DUIs.
Three locations along this arterial – at NW Market Street, NW 65th Street, and NW 85th Street – are featured in Project Know’s top six accident locations around Seattle. These three locations have been host to a total of 38 DUI arrests in 2015, second only to the area surrounding the University of Washington, which had 88 DUI arrests.
For those of us who live near 15th Ave NW, we know how dangerous this roadway can be – multiple lanes and few lights – many refer to it “Ballard’s Freeway”. It will continue to garner this poor reputation until traffic calming measures are taken, including more stop lights.
Thanks to technology-based rideshare services such as Uber and Lyft, it’s never been easier to get from point A to point B. Pull out your smartphone, link to the appropriate app, and you can order and pay for a driver to be at your side within minutes, usually at rates much lower than a traditional taxi.
So why are people still driving after they have been drinking? I would love to hear your thoughts on this. Comment below, or email: westwoodlandneighbors@gmail.com. I may use your comment in a follow-up blog post.
